Responding to claims by Dame Sally Davies, the chief medical officer, that obesity now represents a “national risk” alongside terrorism, Martin Garrett, chairman of campaign group Transport for Great Bristol (TfGB), said: “Bristol is at greater risk from obesity because so many people feel they have no choice but to travel by car.
“Exercise is a vital part of our fight to improve public health, and the more we allow shorter journeys to be made by foot or by bike, the longer Bristolians will live – and the healthier our lives will be.
“The focus on cycling in particular over the last few years has been very welcome – and we must now focus on ensuring everyone has the option of cycling and walking, whatever their gender, age or proximity to the city centre.”
